Chat Strangers

What has to happen before you’re actually talking to someone? On most video chat sites, a fair amount — something to install, an account to make, a profile to fill in while nobody’s on the other end yet. Chat Strangers cuts straight to the part that matters. You open it like any other page, allow the camera, and there’s a stranger, live, ready to talk.

The reason it’s that quick is that it’s a web page and behaves like one. You don’t get an app; you go to the address. It opens in a tab next to whatever else you already had open, and it closes the same way, asking nothing of your phone or laptop in between.

What you’re actually opening

Underneath, it’s plain enough: a random video chat that puts you in front of one stranger at a time. You get a face, they get yours, and either of you can move on to the next whenever you like. There’s no feed to scroll and no roster of profiles to weigh up. The site’s only real job is to put two people who are both online right now on the same screen.

Most of those meetings are brief — a face, a second to decide, and often one of you moves on. That’s worth knowing before you start, because a good part of any session is just that. The talks that do land tend to be the ones you weren’t expecting, which is its own small reason to keep letting the next person load in.

How a call starts

  1. 1Open the page. Nothing to download, nothing to register. It loads the way any website does.
  2. 2Allow the camera. The browser asks once. Say yes and it can show you to the next person.
  3. 3Meet someone. You’re paired with a stranger at random. A real hello goes further than you’d think.
  4. 4Skip or leave. One tap moves you on. Closing the tab ends it — that’s the whole of leaving.

A page, not an app

Broadly, video chat comes two ways: something you install, or something you just open. Chat Strangers is the second kind, and most of what people like about it follows from that one choice.

Opening a page

  • Nothing installs; it runs in the tab you opened
  • Works on the phone or laptop already in your hand
  • No account, no paywall a few screens in
  • Close the tab and it’s done

Installing an app

  • A download, then an update every so often
  • Permissions it keeps once you’ve finished
  • Often a sign-up before you meet anyone
  • Something left on the device to clear out

It’s a page you open and a page you close. That’s the whole of the commitment.

Who you land on

There’s no way to choose who appears, and that’s a fair bit of the appeal. The crowd is international and it turns over through the day, so whoever’s around at your midnight isn’t who’s around at noon. Evenings are the busiest stretch. Beyond that, it’s a mix — here’s the sort of company you tend to land on:

Keeping it civil

The site is moderated, and the report button reaches a moderator who can act on it rather than a form that goes nowhere. Most of what keeps a session pleasant, though, is ordinary courtesy, and it’s the same short list you’d expect:

Quick answers

Do I need an account?

No. There’s nothing to register and no profile to build. You open the page and you’re in.

Is it free?

Yes — the camera, the skipping, all of it. There’s no paywall waiting a few screens in.

Does it work on a phone?

It does. Everything Chat Strangers does happens in the browser, so the same page runs on a phone, a tablet or a laptop — whatever you opened it on.

Can someone record or trace me?

You hold your own camera and can leave in a second. Keep anything identifying out of shot, treat a stranger like a stranger, and use the report button if someone’s out of line.

None of this needs setting up, which is really the whole point. Some evening when you’d otherwise be scrolling, open the page, allow the camera, and see who’s about. If it’s quiet, close the tab — it’ll be right there, exactly the same, the next time you feel like it.
